Medieval Times The Greatest Catastrophe Ever Essay

Medieval times saw an age of countless wars and bloodshed. From Persian conquests and Viking massacres, to Crusades and The Hundred Years War, Europe was no stranger to tragedy. Unfortunately, in the mid 1300s, there was an attack they never saw coming; a bloodthirsty raid unlike anything they had ever encountered. This invader had no mercy, killing all who came in his path and no one was prepared to fight back. He had no preference in victims; men, women, and children; Jews, Christians, and Muslims; even animals all fell prey. This ruthless intruder was the bubonic plague known as The Black Death. Historian, Ole J. Benedictow refers to the epidemic as â€Å"The Greatest Catastrophe Ever,† but just how devastating was it and what was the lasting impact? The plague was caused by bacteria known as Yersinia pestis and was common in rodent populations (â€Å"Ecology and Transmission†). When rodents, such as rats, became infected and began to die off, the fleas who were once feeding off of them needed to find a new host. During Medieval times rats lived in close quarters with humans, even infesting their ships. This neighboring proximity made it easy for fleas to carry the disease to humans (Benedictow). Not only could the plague be transmitted through a flea bite, but exposure to contaminated body fluids and tissues, such as feces and blood, could cause infection. Once a human was infected, they could transmit it through coughs and sneezing, although more rare (â€Å"Ecology andShow MoreRelatedThe Black Death Of Europe1231 Words   |  5 Pages(Wilson, 2001). A Writing Experience Essay Example For Students

A Writing Experience Essay It is a month before the end of eleventh grade and my English teacher drops a five to six page research paper on the class. The topic of this research paper needed to be on one of the problems people face in America in todays society. At the time, I wanted nothing more than to go to the beach and be out of school for the summer. Therefore, I was anything but enthusiastic about this project. Each individual in the class was to pick the topic of his or her research paper out of a basket. Lucky for me, I was given a topic that was very broad and allowed me to write about many different ideas. My research topic was Homelessness. People often have certain views of homelessness because of how or where they are brought up. In order to portray an accurate report, it was necessary that I disregard these inaccurate claims from my report. I needed to search for factual information or theories that are backed up by statistics or personal experiences. This report required a great amount of work and attention. The first step of the project was to gather general ideas to become more knowledgeable about the topic. I went to the library and gathered facts from various books dealing with homelessness. The books were somewhat helpful, but they were unable to give me accurate statistics due to the fact that the books were written many years back. Therefore, I looked at articles that were dated recently in order to get my needed information. At this point, I had note card after note card of information, but something was still lacking. I needed to connect with my topic on a more personal level so my paper could be written with compassion and feeling. Therefore, I drove down to Center City, Philadelphia to get a first-hand idea what homeless life is really like. It took a lot of guts to walk over to homeless individuals and ask them if they would agree to an interview. To my surprise, many of them were more than willing to do so. I asked them many questions about their lifestyle and how they came to be that way. I never realized how kind and unfortunate homeless people are. Until then, I always believed that homeless people were all drug addicts that were too lazy to get a job. These are the horrible and often wrong ideas that are placed on society. I realized many people often try so hard to get well-paying jobs and make a good life for themselves. Even though there are many homeless people in America today, the number remains a minority. Because of this, homeless people are often neglected and not given a fair chance. There was one homeless woman that stood out in my mind. I felt such sympathy and compassion for her situation. She was escaping an abusive relationship with her boyfriend and felt she may die unless she subjected herself to the streets. She saw no other way out. This woman had no family to turn to. Because she had been in this abusive relationship for so long, she had depended on him to support her. She left with nothing, hoping he would not track her down. She had only been homeless for a few months now and was trying to better her life. This woman gave me the knowledge to write my paper with the necessary outlook on homelessness. This writing experience taught me more than I ever thought possible. It enabled me to appreciate everything I am given in life and never to take that for granite. I never until then realized how lucky I am to be brought up in such a loving and sheltered environment, free from poverty and crime. I also became more aware of the lifestyles in which others live and how different they are from my own. The worldliness this writing experience provided me with will most likely help me interact with all different kinds of individuals. .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .postImageUrl , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:hover , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:visited , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:active { border:0!important; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:active , .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33 .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u453816525a0dad4cc54aa70742496d33:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Interpersonal Communication Essay In addition, I now truly understand the saying, Never judge a book by its cover; preconceived notions can only make a person more nave and ignorant to differences. The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn - Intolerance Essays

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Intolerance The entire plot of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is rooted on intolerance between different social groups. Without prejudice and intolerance The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would not have any of the antagonism or intercourse that makes the recital interesting. The prejudice and intolerance found in the book are the characteristics that make The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn great. The author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is Samuel Langhorn Clemens, who is more commonly known by his pen name, Mark Twain. He was born in 1835 with the passing of Haleys comet, and died in 1910 with the passing of Haleys comet. Clemens often used prejudice as a building block for the plots of his stories. Clemens even said, The very ink in which history is written is merely fluid prejudice. There are many other instances in which Clemens uses prejudice as a foundation for the entertainment of his writings such as this quote he said about foreigners in The Innocents Abroad: They spell it Vinci and pronounce it Vinchy; foreigners always spell better than they pronounce. Even in the opening paragraph of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Clemens states, Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot. There were many groups that Clemens contrasted in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The interaction of these different social groups is what makes up the main plot of the novel. For the objective of discussion they have been broken down into five main sets of antithetic parties: people with high levels of melanin and people with low levels of melanin, rednecks and scholarly, children and adults, men and women, and finally, the Sheperdsons and the Grangerfords. Whites and African Americans are the main two groups contrasted in the novel. Throughout the novel Clemens portrays Caucasians as a more educated group that is higher in society compared to the African Americans portrayed in the novel. The cardinal way that Clemens portrays African Americans as obsequious is through the colloquy that he assigns them. Their dialogue is composed of nothing but broken English. One example in the novel is this excerpt from the conversation between Jim the fugitive slave, and Huckleberry about why Jim ran away, where Jim declares, Well you see, it uz dis way. Ole missus-dats Miss Watson-she pecks on me all de time, en treats me pooty rough, but she awluz said she woudn sell me down to Orleans. Although this is the phonetic spelling of how some African Americans from the boondocks used to talk, Clemens only applied the argot to Blacks and not to Whites throughout the novel. There is not one sentence in the treatise spoken by an African American that is not comprised of broken English. The but in spite of that, the broken English does add an entraining piece of culture to the milieu. The second way Clemens differentiates people in the novel of different skin color is that all Blacks in the book are portrayed as stupid and uneducated. The most blatant example is where the African American character Jim is kept prisoner for weeks while he is a dupe in a childish game that Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn play with him. Clemens spends the last three chapters in the novel to tell the tale of how Tom Sawyer maliciously lets Jim, who known only unto Tom is really a free man, be kept prisoner in a shack while Tom torments Jim with musings about freedom and infests his living space with rats, snakes, and spiders. At the end of this charade Tom even admits, Why, I wanted the adventure of it The next two groups Clemens contrasts are the rednecks and the scholarly. In the novel Clemens uses interaction between backwoods and more highly educated people as a vital part of the plot. The main usage of this mixing of two social groups is seen in the development of the two very entertaining characters simply called the duke and the king. These two characters are rednecks who pretend to be of a more scholarly

Critical Analysis of Commerce Platforms Amazon and e

Critical Analysis of Commerce Platforms Amazon and e Introduction The 2 ecommerce platforms chosen for analysis are Amazon and e-Bay. I selected these two platforms because I was most familiar with them and had made online purchases before.Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on Critical Analysis of Commerce Platforms Amazon and e-Bay. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Amazon I first purchased a motivational book from amazon.com then went ahead to buy a DVD. I decided to return the DVD and first visited the returns centre in order to ensure that I was doing the right thing. I was surprised that it was quite easy to return an item as long as it is open. I was lucky enough not to have opened my package. In the Return center, the company had laid out a pictorial representation of the returning process. First, a customer needs to go to this returns center and print the label which would be attached on the package; I printed my return label. The second step was to prepare a pa ckage in which to place the item and the third step was to seal the box and attach the return label at the top of the package. The last step was to ship the package through my local courier. When I took the package to DHS, they told me that I needed to pay shipping fees and I realized that there would be a number of other hidden payments in this process. So I went back to the company website under â€Å"Amazon Help† to find out all the charges involved. I found out that since mine was a media item and it had not been opened, I would get a refund of 80% of my purchasing price. However, because I was returning something out of my own liking rather than a mistake made by Amazon, then I needed to pay for the shipping. I also found out that the reason why I was not getting a full refund was that there was a restocking fee which would be deducted from my desired item. I had returned my package after a period of two days so this was well within the 30 day limit that the company plac es on returned items. I received my refund through the same method that I had used to pay for the service and this was through my credit card. It came after three days. All in all, I felt that their return policy was quite fair; it was reasonable for me to pay shipping charges since they had not committed any wrong. Furthermore, refunds came in on time and I liked the fact that they only deducted 20% out of the original purchase price. This was quite fair because all goods lose value as soon as they leave a business’s premises.Advertising Looking for term paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The reason why Amazon is doing so well in this highly competitive world of ecommerce is their customer focus. The company has created forums for conducting web reviews in which customers rate items and give their comments about the items. In fact, I bought the self help book and DVD only after look ing through customer reviews to find out if it would be worth my while. Additionally, the website has provided a content search platform in which one can analyze book content. I was therefore able to buy my book only after ascertaining that it contained only the material I was looking for. Amazon also impressed me with the bonuses they give on credit cards and shipping and it was great that the book cost much less here than it did in some other book stores. I was impressed by their click ordering because I did not have to follow such a long process in order to get my product and I received it on time. The company has such a large inventory of items and it is almost impossible to miss one’s favorite book or item. For an ecommerce website to do well it must have an air tight marketing strategy. I saw an advertisement for this motivational book on another website I was visiting. In fact, Amazon ads can be found in almost all types of websites so it is quite easy to get external information about the service. The website is user friendly because payment options and terms of use are clearly written. I thought their customer service was top notch and this was even increased by the fact that I could track my product movement. The company has a ‘contact us’ link on almost all sections of their websites. I did not wait long before someone could attend to me. In fact, it is the personal service that illustrated how professional the company was. EBay My purchases from E-bay were for a commemorative coin and a watch. I decided to return the coin and found that their return policy was quite different. Since this is a flea market, all sellers had their own return policies. I went back to my seller and read his return policy. He had stated that customers must return items within 7 days of purchase, but this was not inclusive of shipping time. He specified that a refund would only be possible after the good had arrived back to the seller and that Return of merchandise authorization was needed. I therefore contacted the seller and told him that I changed my mind about the product and wished to return it to him. The customer was expected to pay for shipping and he asserted that this would be done through PayPal.Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on Critical Analysis of Commerce Platforms Amazon and e-Bay. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More After contacting him for authorization, he first told me that I had already exceeded the 7 day limit so I should not expect a refund but I requested him to be lenient with me since I was going to buy more collectables from him in the future. He told me that he could give me credit for future purchases that was equivalent to 50% of the coin’s value- I received a gift certificate. I negotiated with him and he agreed to increase it to 70%. I also had to pay for shipping. I am yet to buy more items from him so that I can investigate whether he will stick to his assertion or not. I thought this return policy was more stringent because the duration was only 7 days. I also felt that he should be willing to send refunds since the items are not breakable or easily spoilt like electronics. There is room for improvement here even though the concerned collectables seller tried to accommodate me as much as possible. I was impressed by the company’s web design; Products were categorized so that it would be easier to find what I was looking for. I also found that prices, photos and descriptions of the items were well done such that vital information could be found at a glance. However, sometimes the descriptions can be different from the actual commodity since these are mostly second hand commodities. I found that the customer service was not as powerful as it was at Amazon because most of the work is left to independent sellers in the eBay village. In fact, I got most of my information from blogs and external par ties when trying to find out about return policies. This site is unique in that I could access so many commodities and so many sellers at one place. Everything from clothes, to phones, furniture, electronics and many more were available from this particular online shop. So the convenience was definitely something worthwhile. I could imagine that many other customers from around the world were buying and bidding just like I was at EBay yet I could carry out my transactions very quickly. The company must have very effective servers to monitor these transactions.Advertising Looking for term paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More However, I did not like the fact that most items needed to be bided on. It wastes a lot of time because the seller must decide which price is most convenient. Although there were items that had fixed prices, these represented the smaller percentage. Conclusion Generally, Amazon appeared to be more user friendly because it is owned and run by a single firm. On the other hand, EBay is operated by a series of sellers from around the world; they all have their different offerings, conditions and expectations so synchronization is a challenge here. Both websites have great variety and conduct transactions quickly.

12 Writers Discuss the Writing Process

12 Writers Discuss the Writing Process For almost a decade, the Writers on Writing column in The New York Times provided professional writers with an opportunity to talk about their craft. Two collections of these columns have been published: Writers on Writing: Collected Essays from The New York Times (Times Books, 2001)Writers on Writing, Volume II: More Collected Essays from The New York Times (Times Books, 2004). Although most of the contributors have been novelists, the insights they offer into the process of writing should be of interest to all writers. Here are excerpts from 12 of the authors who have contributed pieces to Writers on Writing. Geraldine BrooksWrite what you know. Every guide for the aspiring author advises this. Because I live in a long-settled rural place, I know certain things. I know the feel of a newborn lambs damp, tight-curled fleece and the sharp sound a well-bucket chain makes as it scrapes on stone. But more than these material things, I know the feelings that flourish in small communities. And I know other kinds of emotional truths that I believe apply across the centuries. (July 2001) Richard Ford  Beware of writers who tell you how hard they work. (Beware of anybody who tries to tell you that.) Writing is indeed often dark and lonely, but no one really has to do it. Yes, writing can be complicated, exhausting, isolating, abstracting, boring, dulling, briefly exhilarating; it can be made to be grueling and demoralizing. And occasionally it can produce rewards. But its never as hard as, say, piloting an L-1011 into OHare on a snowy night in January, or doing brain surgery when you have to stand up for 10 hours straight, and once you start you cant just stop. If youre a writer, you can stop anywhere, any time, and no one will care or ever know. Plus, the results might be better if you do. (November 1999) Allegra Goodman  Carpe diem. Know your literary tradition, savor it, steal from it, but when you sit down to write, forget about worshiping greatness and fetishizing masterpieces. If your inner critic continues to plague you with invidious comparisons, scream, Ancestor worship! and leave the building. (March 2001) Mary GordonIts a bad business, this writing. No marks on paper can ever measure up to the words music in the mind, to the purity of the image before its ambush by language. Most of us awake paraphrasing words from the Book of Common Prayer, horrified by what we have done, what we have left undone, convinced that there is no health in us. We accomplish what we do, creating a series of stratagems to explode the horror. Mine involve notebooks and pens. I write by hand. (July 1999) Kent HarufAfter finishing the first draft, I work for as long as it takes (for two or three weeks, most often) to rework that first draft on a computer. Usually that involves expansion: filling in and adding to, but trying not to lose the spontaneous, direct sound. I use that first draft as a touchstone to make sure everything else in that section has the same sound, the same tone and impression of spontaneity. (November 2000) Alice HoffmanI wrote to find beauty and purpose, to know that love is possible and lasting and real, to see day lilies and swimming pools, loyalty and devotion, even though my eyes were closed and all that surrounded me was a darkened room. I wrote because that was who I was at the core, and if I was too damaged to walk around the block, I was lucky all the same. Once I got to my desk, once I started writing, I still believed anything was possible. (August 2000) Elmore LeonardNever use an adverb to modify the verb said ... he admonished gravely. To use an adverb this way (or almost any way) is a mortal sin. The writer is now exposing himself in earnest, using a word that distracts and can interrupt the rhythm of the exchange. (July 2001) Walter Mosley  If you want to be a writer, you have to write every day. The consistency, the monotony, the certainty, all vagaries and passions are covered by this daily reoccurrence. You dont go to a well once but daily. You dont skip a childs breakfast or forget to wake up in the morning. Sleep comes to you each day, and so does the muse. (July 2000) William Saroyan  How do you write? You write, man, you write, thats how, and you do it the way the old English walnut tree puts forth leaf and fruit every year by the thousands. ... If you practice an art faithfully, it will make you wise, and most writers can use a little wising up. (1981) Paul West  Of course the writer cannot always burn with a hard gemlike flame or a white heat, but it should be possible to be a chubby hot-water bottle, rendering maximum attentiveness in the most enterprising sentences. (October 1999) Donald E. WestlakeIn the most basic way, writers are defined not by the stories they tell, or their politics, or their gender, or their race, but by the words they use. Writing begins with language, and it is in that initial choosing, as one sifts through the wayward lushness of our wonderful mongrel English, that choice of vocabulary and grammar and tone, the selection on the palette, that determines whos sitting at that desk. Language creates the writers attitude toward the particular story hes decided to tell. (January 2001) Elie WieselAcutely aware of the poverty of my means, language became an obstacle. At every page, I thought, Thats not it. So I began again with other verbs and other images. No, that wasnt it either. But what exactly was that it I was searching for? It must have been all that eludes us, hidden behind a veil so as not to be stolen, usurped and trivialized. Words seemed weak and pale. (June 2000)

Individual Essay Virtual Teams Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Individual Virtual Teams - Essay Example 300). It is important to note that even though members of a virtual team may work from different branches of the same organization, their contribution to the team is expected to enable the organization reach a common goal. Body Before an organization decides to form a virtual team as a means of attaining organizational goals, it is critical to evaluate the pros and cons of such a team. Such an evaluation enables organizations to determine if a virtual team would be best suited to meet the needs and goals of the organization. Some of the advantages of such teams are outlined below. First, virtual teams are highly convenient because of the lack of time restrictions. Since the members of a virtual team often reside in different cities/ countries, members are aware, from the onset, that team meetings may be held at odd hours. The communication technology that is used by virtual teams is designed to be effective irrespective of time differences. The ability of such teams to work without t ime restrictions is very beneficial since essentially, a company can work for twenty-four hours a day (Hungwei & Heng-Yu, 2011, p. 83). This increases the amount of work that is accomplished in one day, which leads to increased productivity. The lack of restrictions on time also means that in most cases, virtual teams hold meetings when members have varying energy levels because of the time difference (Berry, 2011, p. 193). This is beneficial since team members are not likely to be exhausted at the same time, which makes the virtual team highly productive (Ofir & Zhang, 2010, p. 368). Another notable advantage of virtual teams is that they may cost the company less in terms of overhead. As noted in this paper, virtual team members do not necessarily have to be in the office to hold meetings. In fact some members may work for their homes on a full time basis because face to face meetings in the office may not be needed. As such, companies are able to save costs that they may otherwis e have incurred on things such as office space and other office amenities (Panteli & Tucker, 2009, p. 113). Virtual teams are also beneficial since they enable companies to acquire the best possible variety of employees that can steer the company to success. In some cases, companies may be unable to hire all the skills they need because they rely on local-based employees who can be able to report to the local office. By making use of virtual teams, companies can ensure that they do not compromise and hire minimally skilled employees (Jacques, Garger, & Brown, 2009, pp. 153-154). Virtual teams can comprise of members who are not able to relocate to the location of the actual office but who are just as skilled as or even more skilled than employees who work from the office. In addition to this, a virtual team is also advantageous since it leads to reliance on a result- based method of measuring employee performance. During the evaluation of the performance of employees who work from t he office, some companies may erroneously rate the performance of employees who stay longer in the office highly. However, just because an employee put more effort by staying in the office longer, this does not necessarily mean that such an employee contributes highly to the attainment of organizational goals. Since the performance

Capitalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Capitalism - Essay Example Trading, banking and the production of certain goods was done on a capitalistic basis and thrived in and amongst the Ancient Greek city-states. During the era of Roman supremacy, capitalist methods developed further. The Roman government protected trade, interest rates came down and the standard of living improved. With the collapse of the Roman Empire capitalism practically disappeared. After a long period of stagnation, a revival of trade began and commercial and capitalist activity gradually increased as early as the 11th century. The Crusades contributed significantly to this revival due to the large scale movement of men and supplies from Europe to the Holy Land. This transport enriched merchants and ship-owners of several Italian cities. Italy, especially Venice, became the leader of this revival of commerce, industry and capitalism. Besides Italy, the Hanseatic League in northern Europe, and numerous other regions, such as the Netherlands, also shared in the revival of capital ism by the end of the 15th century. At this point further development was hindered by three obstacles; 1. The expense of overland travel, 2. An inadequate supply of gold and silver to serve as a medium of exchange and, 3. The restrictive practices of the guilds. All of these obstacles were to be overcome within the next centuries. The rise of the modern nation state was also closely associated with the rise of the modern capitalistic economy. The royal monarchs who created the national states after the Middle Ages made great use of the rising middle class in overcoming the feudal nobility. The strength of this middle class lay was in its wealth gained through capitalistic enterprises. It was the great voyages of discovery made by mariners in the late 15th and early 16th centuries that opened up the era of capitalist economy on a scale more vast than anything dreamed of began the era of the global economy. So great was this expansion and so significant were the changes it

Antigone Essay Example for Free

Antigone Essay Remember those people who always thought they were right, and they always ended up in trouble for it? I Sophocles’ play Antigone, the main characters Antigone and Creon show how being so hubris can be tragic to your life. Set back in ancient Greece an epic battle takes place and brothers end up killing each other. One was allowed a proper burial, yet Polyinesis was not. Antigone felt disappointed by this and decided to bury them yet Creon the newly appointed king did not appreciate the rule breaking. Due to the fact that Antigone and creon exhibited excessive pride, their lives were ruined. Antigone’s arrogance and brashness ultimately led to her death. For example, on Creon’s first day as king he made a decree that no one should bury Polyneisis body. When Antigone heard this, she went to Ismene and asked for her help; yet Ismene refused and called her a criminal. Antigone still disagreed, â€Å"But I will bury him; and if I must die, I say that this crime is holy; I shall lie down with him in death†(673,55-57) This proved that Antigone was cocky and she was sort of stating that all her wrong doings are â€Å"holy†; she is referring to herself as always being right. This affected her though distorting her view on life. In addition to her argument with Ismene, Antigone then was caught in the act of burying Polyniesis and was brought in and questioned by Creon. â€Å"And you Antigone, with your head hanging – do you confess this thing†(679, 53) When Antigone didn’t deny her crime and boasted to the king and the elders, It proves how narcissistic that she is. If she would have not been so boastful I doubt that Croen would have been so harsh to Antigone. Furthermore, Creon then calls in Ismene to protest against her crime as well. Creon started o believe that she helped Antigone to plot against him. Ismene then lied and said she did help to Antigone’s surprise. Antigone become outraged and denied her hand in the deed. Ismene is displeased in antigone’s punishment, â€Å"Do you refuse me, Antigone? I want to die with you; I too have a duty that I must discharge to the dead†(681, 138). Antigone was then enraged further and rebelled against Ismene, â€Å"You shall not lessen my death by sharing it†(681, 139) Antigone is showing self centered and concided she was. She believed that she was so important because she did the right thing by the gods that no one should die except her because she was special. However, Antigone was not the only major character with this flaw. This proves how arrogance can really damage anyone’s life just like it did to Antigone and Creons’. Pride and the excess of it played a big role in this play, being the tragic flaw of both main characters; arrogance is not only a big part of this play but also our history, there will always be people who can never be wrong. Many people are just like Creon and Antigone, Always thinking they are right. Is your life headed for a fate just like Antigone’s plot?

Critical Review on the Iliad :: essays research papers

Nature’s Force   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Simone Weil, a French writer, explores the depth and motive of why and how we do the things we do. In this critical review, Weil elucidates the role of force in the Iliad. It is exceptionally difficult to put into words the meaning that Weil gives force. When she defines it, she states, â€Å"it is that x that turns anybody who is subjected to it into a thing† (331). When I first read this, I did not comprehend what she meant by it. As Weil refers to force, she uses in the context of war and the taking of lives in the Iliad. This force takes away all natural abilities. Weil explains how all living things respond to stimuli. The muscles in our body have reactions to things that take place in our environment. The force that she is trying to define is one that takes away this ability to respond. In war, a soldier must look past the pain that he is causing in taking another human being’s life. Weil suggests that this is as if life is being removed from the body of this soldier, resulting in a breathing corpse. Remorse becomes an overlooked emotion and all sensation vanishes. Does this not constitute a corpse, when all ability to respond to what is going on around him has departed; therefore taking away the very factor that defines a living object? When examining force by means of killing others, this force does not only have an effect on the victim, but also on the conqueror. â€Å"Force is as pitiless to the man who possesses it, or thinks he does, as it is to its victims; the second it crushes, the first it intoxicates† (332). Weil goes on to say that force is not really a retainable thing. All persons, weak and strong, have to at one point in their life relinquish control to force. No one is exempt. She points to Achilles as an example. When he is killing Hector, he is holding the force against Hector to take his life. On the other hand, when Agamemnon purposely degrades Achilles by taking his war prize, Achilles goes to be alone and weep in his humiliation. A force knocks him down as he knocked his opponent Hector down. To show the cycle, we find Agamemnon weeping just a few days later as a result of a force.

Students Go to University After Graduating from High School or Go to Work

It is probably true that students who go directly from high school to university or college do not get too many benefits. Consequently, some assert that students should take a job or go travelling before starting their university lives, which I fully agree with. First, those who go to university after one or two years work, get work experience and earn salaries. Consequently in some western countries, most undergraduate students pay their tuition fees by themselves. For example, for students who work in Starbucks, one of the benefits of having a job there is that they make lots of friends and get a wage at the same time. This experience is valuable. Perhaps when they graduate from their respective universities, they have a much higher possibility of getting jobs. Similarly to go travelling in the real world is not a bad choice either. Some would like to travel abroad, so that they enjoy sharing experiences with local people. They can share with other people observations with foreigner s from different cultural positions when they are travelling in a different city or a foreign country. They never get this real life experience in the university.Nevertheless, most undergraduate students would still like to go directly from high school to university. It is a process of studying step by step. From primary school to university, they get knowledge only from the courses they take and many think, that just as the old saying goes that† Knowledge is power†, so they believe they still have some benefit. To sum up, both alternatives have their advantages, but I support the idea that students are better to take a job or to go travelling before going to university. (281words)

Articles of Confederation Essay

America’s first form of government was under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was written after the Revolutionary War, compiled of ideas by the Continental Congress. Under the Articles of Confederation its powers included conducting foreign relations, settling disputes between states, controlling maritime affairs, regulating Indian trade, and valuing state and national coinage. It purposely did not give the national government all the power in fear of tyranny like in Britain. In the end, the Articles of Confederation proved to be both inadequate in economic conditions and foreign relations. Under the Articles of Confederation the national government was not allowed to raise revenue to finance the war and other essential needs that a country need money for. The state governments had control of taxing the American people but many were unwilling to do so. So to try and finance the war the government and the states started to print currency. Although the currency was just paper and not backed by anything it was given out freely without excessive downgrading during 1775 to 1776. As 1776 went on the demand for both military supplies and civilian goods began to increase as the war progressed. America also encouraged trade and local production between the states. As the end of 1776 was approaching, the armies suffered reverses in both New York and New Jersey causing the prices to rise and inflation to finally set in. The state governments tried to fight inflation by taking control of wages and prices, and accepting paper money equal to hard money. They would also borrow funds, establish lotteries and even levy taxes to try and stop inflation. Their efforts were useless, though Congress attempted to stop printing currency altogether, they relied solely on money contributed by the states. By 1780, currency was worthless. Congressmen started to take action by establishing a department of finance with help from Robert Morris, a wealthy Philadelphia merchant. The government then asked the states to amend the Articles of Confederation and allow the Congress to levy duty of 5% on imported goods. Robert Morris had put national finances on stable balance, but the customs that Congress asked for were never adopted. The states’ had resisted in fear that the central government would become too powerful. As the war was ending Congress had to face major diplomatic problems. In the Articles of Confederation Article 4 had promised repayment of prewar debts, most of which were owed to by Americans to British merchants. In Article 5 it stated that states should allow loyalists to recover their confiscated property, which aroused considerable opposition. The state governments passed lass that denied the British subjects the right to sue for the recovery of property or debts in American courts. Since Congress had no power under the Articles of Confederation to overturn the decision, many loyalists were unable to get back what had rightfully been theirs to begin with. With this decision it gave the British an excuse to main their military posts on the Great Lakes long after when troops were supposed to have withdrawn. This had showed Congress weakness in the area of trade because the Articles of Confederation denied power to establish a national commercial policy. Right after the war had ended, Britain, France and Spain limited American trade with the colonies. The Americans were outraged but were unable to do anything about it. They thought that after the war, their independence would bring about trade with all nations. Members of the Congress, watched as British manufactured goods started to flood the states, while American produce could no longer be sold in British West Indies, once its prime market of trade. In the areas of finance, overseas trade and foreign affairs the Articles of Confederation were obviously inadequate. Congress was not allowed to levy taxes, nor was it able to impose its will on the states to establish a commercial policy. The Articles of Confederation, led the economy into a depression. The Continental Congress gave little power under the Articles of Confederation to the central government in fear of tyranny. In the end it only proved that too little power is not sufficient in controlling both economic conditions and foreign relations.

Authentication in e-Commerce essays

Authentication in e-Commerce essays E-commerce is a growing technology in today's business and trade. It has become a quick and easy medium of trading, facilitating buying and selling for both the consumers and the merchants. With just a few keystrokes and entry of one's information, business transactions are easily carried out. In view of this, because e-commerce utilizes the Internet, it is very important that e-commerce applications should provide protection to business transactions' critical information, both of the consumer's and the Authentication is among the many forms of protecting information and securing transactions in e-commerce. With the use of authentication tools, information sent online can be validated. The growing number of Internet users makes classified information more and more volatile from online hackers. Thus, it is essential for e-commerce applications to apply several authentication processes. According to Charles Kolodgy, in Michael "individuals on the Web are not authenticated, it is relatively easy to impersonate somebody online" Authentication is basically a form of verifying the true identity of an individual. An instance of an authentication process is that a consumer may be required to key several information about himself or herself before an e-commerce transaction begins. Matthew D. Ford, in his Identity Authentication and E-commerce, listed the following methods to authenticate 1. Something the claimant knows 4. Claimant is at a particular place (at a particular time) 5. Authentication is established by a trusted third party Despite of the many threats, such as hacking and communication interceptions, to the confidentiality of information across Internet, e- commerce is still a living technology nowadays. Size, Facts, and Figures of the Alamosaurus

Size, Facts, and Figures of the Alamosaurus Although there may be other genera whose fossils have yet to be discovered, Alamosaurus (Greek for Alamo lizard and pronounced AL-ah-moe-SORE-us) is one of the few titanosaurs known to have lived in the late Cretaceous (70-65 million years ago) in North America, and possibly in vast numbers: According to one analysis, there may have been as many as 350,000 of these 60-foot-long herbivores living in Texas at any given time. Its closest relative appears to have been another titanosaur, Saltasaurus. Bigger Than We Thought A recent analysis has shown that Alamosaurus may have been a bigger dinosaur than originally estimated, possibly in the weight class of its more famous South American cousin Argentinosaurus. It turns out that some of the type fossils used to reconstruct Alamosaurus may have come from adolescents rather than full-grown adults, meaning that this titanosaur may well have attained lengths of over 60 feet from head to tail and weights in excess of 70 or 80 tons. The Origin of the Name By the way, its an odd fact that Alamosaurus wasnt named after the Alamo in Texas, but the Ojo Alamo sandstone formation in New Mexico. This herbivore already had its name when numerous (but incomplete) fossils were discovered in the Lone Star State, so you might say that everything worked out in the end!
